Absolutely, it was a cheap shot, and it mischaracterizes the circumstances.
Typical of election year politics, I suppose. "Selling" a vote to appease
the voters, and get elected is precisely what an elected official is
supposed to do. People will (and should) vote for the person who best
represents them. If you look at the Strib poll on the smoking ban, about 75%
say it should be amended, or eliminated altogether. Our electeds aren't
supposed to rule, they are supposed to represent. I'm not a McLaughlin fan,
but if he'll *represent* us, be willing to admit a mistake, and work to
correct it, I'll vote for him before Rybak any day.

Further, McLaughlin hasn't flip-flopped. He hasn't voted on anything except
a study. He's made no statement as to his intentions on the smoking ban.
What's wrong with looking at facts? What's wrong with understanding the
consequences of the laws that are enacted? I guess Rybak would rather live
in a dream-world with blinders on than look at the effects of his policies.
"There's no crime in Minneapolis! We don't need so many cops. Let's give
money to developers instead!" And meanwhile, violent crime is skyrocketing.
Cops are getting stabbed, people are getting killed and car-jacked, just as
an example of Rybak's rose-tinted shades in action. Of course, now that he's
fighting for his job, Rybak comes up with a plan for more cops: increase our
taxes! Hey Rybak, how about getting the cops paid for first, and worry about
all the other goodies with what's left?
