It looks like the video board is dedicated to converting the output to
specific country regions. So I'd guess that it doesn't do anything to
the motherboard. Looking at the schematic bears this out - there are
RGB, power and audio connections.

True, but it might make a difference to shipping. If I could persuade
someone in Japan to sell me the CX7 case and motherboard alone, no video
board, no PSU, no SFG, even no keyboard, I'd be happy (I want the case
for the CX7 logo, and the battery compartment hardware).
I see where the additional DRAMs go on the main board, so I guess the
16K being on the board must be a cost-cutting exercise or perhaps a way
of ensuring the RAM is in the right place on what is really an MSX2 with
MSX1 ROMs.
The Sunrise IDE/RS-232 combo is only 65 Euro (I think, about 40), so I
might get one anyway and see if it works with the CX5MII/128 - it's ROM
presumably replaces the MSX1 ROMs, and apart from the lack of VRAM,
everything else is as it would be on an MSX2 - 9938, MSX2 engine, and
mapper 128K.
