There wouldn't be any laws against mma. If there is no law/rules, nothing can be done. diana from indiana

Query:
As we know MMA shows its ugly head occasionally at some unmentionable salons.

In the absence of licenses (no suspension) how would these defaulters be penalized?

I think I understand where you stand on the licensing issue, Maggie and, although I agree, I'm not sure what would happen if there weren't licensing. Schools could still operate and continue training. But, since there would be no licensing, they wouldn't have to teach to the test. hmmmm... Licensing may not affect manufacturers and what they chose to design and produce. Doug Schoon could continue to educate using his scientific research and information. Does licensing really promote safety and the informed usage of materials and equipment? Perhaps but we (nail techs) sure see plenty of damage done by licensed individuals. It does make a person stop and weigh the evidence. AND YEAH, why retain some licensing and not others??

how do they propose to do away with cosmo licensing while retaining mani and esthi licensing? Will that mean you won't need a license to do hair, but if you HAD a cosmo license you'll have to GO BACK and get a mani and/or esthi license to continue to legally perform those services? Or does IN actually seperate hair/nails/skin so cosmos can't perfrom ALL services, just hair?

Y'all might be aware that I am total Devil's Advocate on this issue-- I think licensing is a waste of tax payers' money-- but it doesn't make sense to keep some licenses and not others.

Wendy, read closer..  it says IF the legislation is NOT passed - the board NOT eliminated - the manicurist and esthetician licenses will not be changed.. they said if  the bill passed, the entire board would be dissolved and let the buyer beware.. if it fails and the board is retained, there will be changes to the school, educator, cosmo, barber and other licenses, but NOT nails and este's..

so many double negatives its very confusing..
pass this bill - board and ALL licensing goes bye-bye
fail the bill - many changes but not to the nail or esthetician license

Oh Diana, How discouraging!
It seems as though they will keep Manicurists and Estheticians
licensed, which is good.
It may not pass or pass with modifications
I feel your pain! I am surprised they didn't use CT as a shining
example of how licensing is not needed. ( I, too, am being facetious!)
I'll help spread the word.

Well it happened.  As of yesterday, to eliminate all Cosmetology and
Barber licensing  is now up for a vote in the House and Senate.

This means that there will be no licensing, no schools, no regulation.
The schooling and license you have now will mean nothing.

This means that anyone off the street can do hair, nails, tanning,
waxing, anything.

I have no idea how this will be handled by the supply houses, because
they only sell to those that are licensed.  All new ball game for all
manufacturers.

Here is the website that contains the full ROEC report:  http://www.in.gov/pla/files/Regulated_Occupations_Recommendations_Rep ...

Of course with any proposed legislation, licensees may also contact
their Legislator athttp://www.in.gov/legislative/index.htm.

The ROEC committee basically says that if the consumer is hurt, they
can hire an attorney, if they get a bad hair cut, they can switch to
another salon, buyer beware.  But Government regulation is not needed.
   Please read the report.

As for all of the non Indiana techs on here, If one state does this,
others will follow.

I cannot lobby for or against this because I work for the Governor.
My advice is if you agree or disagree, contact your local
representative.

I cannot contact everyone, can you please pass the word in your salons.
