It's not competition for any of us. There have always been and always will be people who are as good as we are who do their own nails. They were never going to be our clients anyway so we haven't lost the potential of their revenue. Then there will be a second kind of woman who buys this kit and will jack up her nails and come to us to fix them. Bam! New client for us who learned the hard way. She'll always be grateful. As for why we have to pay so much more for our professional lamps, that's a damn good question!

Subject: NailTech:: CVS Discovery

Hi there nail tech buddies,
While in CVS (pharmacy) a couple of days ago, I saw a nail product that at
first quick glance looked like Shellac(tm). Upon closer inspection, discoverered that it was an LED gel polish product, geared toward the person who wants to do her own home gel polish manicure. If you want to see it, here's a link: http://www.sensationailgel.com/ There is a fairly extensive Q&A section on the website about this product as well.
I think what bothered me most about it all was that the basic kit
contained base and top gel (one product), primer, color, cleanser and an LED lamp...all for the price of $60! This of course got me thinking: how come our "professional" LED lamps cost in the neighborhood of $500? Yes, I am very well aware of the fact that our professional products are MUCH higher quality than the public version. I will also admit that I don't know a whole lot about the difference between UV lamps and LED lamps (other than the very basics).
Now, do I think this at-home kit is going to steal customers from us
professionals? In all likelihood, probably not, or at least not too many. Let's fact it, our clients come to us because they can't polish their nails! (At least that what my customers tell me.) If they can't polish their nails, what on earth makes them think they can do UV gel polish nails to themselves...geez! Yeah, I know our clients come to us for a lot of reasons, but the polish one is a biggie.
Anyway, thought you all might be interested in knowing there's yet another
at-home competitive product.  <sigh>
