Here it depends heavily on *how* I crash.

I've noticed if I get a flashing red Guru, my modem will drop offline
when I try to go online with Miami. But, if my system just crashes and
I hit reset it will go online fine without requiring another call.

I suspect that a flashing red Guru screen sends crap to the serial
port.
