The idea to fight the Brits was not the Mahatma's but that of Lokmanya Tilak
and Gopal Krishna Gokhale. Gandhiji initially felt that British rule was
beneficial, it having liberated us from corrupt and inept fiefdoms.
Gandhiji's contribution to freedom was liberating swaraj from the ivory towers
and making it the common mans fight. The principles of Ahimsa and austerity
were not his either but of his guru Shrimad Rajchandra. There are several
manuscripts, letters etc between Gandhiji and Rajchandra at Shrimad
Rajchandra Ashram, Agas in gujarati (unintelligible to me,unfortunately).

A lesson perhaps for us too.

Even the educated (which is a miniscule minority anyway) fail to see the
assault on their freedom by changes in standards, copyright and ip laws,
genetic and medical products etc. In fact a complete ignorance of technology
as it shapes the air, water, food and thought within their heads.

Do we need a membership drive?
