What is the criteria for a Solaris Networking engineer to be selected as
a Opensolaris contributor/core contributer( given there is no Solaris
branch and all projects in Networking are being done as part of
Opensolaris.) ? What is the difference between a contributer and a core
contributer?
Sangeeta,
If you contribute anything (code is not the only thing) to OpenSolaris,
then you are part of OpenSolaris community. So I agree that all the
work being done inside Sun Solaris Networking group is contributing to
OpenSolaris in general and OpenSolaris Networking community in
particular.
As for core vs contributor, let me try and answer it from bottom up.
If a person contributes anything (code, advice, docs, discussions) in a
positive manner and the other members recognize that, then the
person definitely merits to be a contributer for this community. From
that perspective all of Solaris networking within Sun are probably
eligible to be added to the contributer list. But eligibility doesn't
mean that they want to. So its simply based on either the person
asking or someone else nominating and the person accepting. I think
the grants expire every two year and the person just needs to renew it
to show that they still care.
Now for core contributor, you look at your contributors list and see
who has gone a bit above that. It needs to be a bit more tangible
where members can appreciate and accept.
Again, there are no guidelines and a policy document and each
community generally manages its own list. We don't want to start
writing a guideline now and are hoping that people can apply
good judgement on their own.
Hope that helps.

Guys,
I agree with the direction but to keep things a bit more objective,
can each of us send a list with few lines for each person proposed.
This is for the core list. We don't have fixed guidelines but
in general people contributing code, awareness, discussions,
basic evangelism etc are great and we should definitely add
them to contributors list.
For core contributors, the work done (in making this community
successful and thrive) needs to be a bit more tangible but I will leave
it to the core members to apply their judgement.
Also, for all members of networking community - you can always
propose yourselves or ask one of the current core members to
propose your name.
Cheers,
Sunay
