Having spent several hours trying to find the problem, the best I have been able to get was to do a fresh installation of just KDE and then adding Gnome afterwards. Gnome is now listed in the log-in screen's list of sessions. Gnome starts loading, but after about two seconds, the small window which shows its loading progress, "disappears" and I am just left with the background :( It's the same if I boot with Failsafe, and then do a "startx Gnome" So, I am now completely lost!
