Carl,
could you reveal a secret to me: does X 4.x.x uses Xwrapper?
My RH 7.2 (like 7.1 before...) points /etc/X11/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86, I already 
posted the
question sometimes ago since the use of Xwrapper is a security feature...
