One example of that might be a place where the usual case is that bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, but if the route is signed then pedestrians must yield the right of way. This sort of special status is certainly not a prerequisite for using bicycle=designated, it only means that e.g. “bicycle=designated marks a designated bicycle route, whatever that means for this jurisdiction.” – as the page says, “It *may* imply extra usage rights or may be just a suggested route” It sounds like for you it’s the latter. Perhaps the wiki page should be reworded to be more clear. I thought “may” was enough to avoid confusion. > But if you think that bicycle=yes paths shouldn't be shown on a > cycle map but bicycle=designated should, then there must be some > important difference I'm not getting from that wiki page; it's > clear to me that our cycle trails ought to show up on a cycle map. bicycle=yes just means that bicycles can go there. It would not be incorrect to tag all roads except interstates with a bicycle=yes, at least in my jurisdiction. So tagging bicycle=yes by itself doesn’t give anything beyond what no tagging at all would. > Could you possibly explain this a little, so I know how to mark > trails in future (and whether I should go back and change the > ones I've already entered)? Should I (and anyone else who's been > using bicycle=yes) be changing all our highway=path bicycle=yes > mountain bike trails to bicycle=designated instead? If they’re intended for mountain biking, it’s probably correct to mark them as bicycle=designated. So I’d suggest doing just that. Naturally I’m not an absolute authority on this, and tagging bicycle=designated won’t have any effect on the cycle map until the people who admin that map decide to do so. Neither will bicycle=yes. Unfortunately you’ll need to use highway=cycleway in order to get it to appear on the Open Cycle Map. (this is correct tagging; it just doesn’t work well with shared-use trails) On the plus side, highway=path with bicycle=designated or foot=designated (or both) /are/ rendered on the standard mapnik layer.
