I had a silver '05 Dodge Dakota extra cab - best looking truck out
there (I still think). But at 18k miles the problems were
overwhelming. The power steering went out. Fortunately it was still
covered be the warranty. I couldn't get the brakes working right.
The front overheated. I changed the calipers, the pads, the rotors -
a garage changed the lines and told me there were no obstructions.
Everything worked as it should. This garage is the best. They do all
my motorcycle inspections. I go there just to hang out sometimes.
They even invested in a motorcycle wheel/ tire changer just for my
sake and other bikers I would send their way.
Anyway the Dodge dealer wouldn't cover the brake problem. Even after
I had all that done, the front brakes still smoked. Then there was
the gas mileage. Eventually in December lat year with about $2000
worth of repairs to be done, which included new tires and Dodge not
willing to help with the other problems I went to the Toyota dealer
and told them up front it's problems (the truck looked and ran great)
and with a lot of negotiation I traded in the Dakota on a 2009
Tacoma access cab. I bought the Dakota for $16000 in late '06.
Toyota gave me $12k on trade in, I got $2k off the new Tacoma because
it had 73 miles on the clock being driven from another dealership and
I showed them an offer by another Toyota Dealership in N.J (a huge
dealership) for the exact same truck for $2k less, no money down and
interest free 3 year pay off.
I owned a Tacoma (an '02 or '03) in the Mariana Islands until we left
in '06 so am very familiar with Toyotas - just couldn't afford one
when we returned to the States,
Graham
