It is merely speculation on my part, but the Normans invaded Briton and the 
evidence of their influence is in the English they speak and the spelling.  
Remember that English and German both came from Anglo-Saxon;  having studied 
German from a philogolist, It was most interesting when I read Old English and 
could understand it because I knew German.
The Britons were fierce, as were the Huns.  The Romans never completely 
conquered the former and the latter invaded Rome.
Remember that when there were no heirs in Britain, a German kinfolk came to 
rule England.
I stopped studying before I learned more than this...
