Alcohol puts out less power than gasoline, but a little water - up to 30% is what I read years back - makes up most or all of the difference. It will still burn with the water in it, and the heat makes the water turn to steam and that is how it shores up the lack of output with gas. Gasoline with water injection in a high compression engine will increase the power of gasoline and in the instances I know of doubles the mileage.

At the race track the do use it. While you don't need it added it to make the engine run, it does greatly increase the power output and running qualities of the engine. I wasn't stating that alcohol was a bad fuel, just drastically different from gas. The problem I see and please correct me if I'm wrong is that ethenol absorbs water which not only reduces its effectiveness, but when mixed with gas causes gumming much sooner that gas alone.
