Ed, Make sure the kickstand is up when you start rolling. Sounds stupid, but it happens.
As far as bike size, it depends a lot on whether you do freeway or interstate much. I've got a 450 and while I technically can do interstate, like Joey said you end up all over the throttle just to maintain 70. It's not pleasant.
