I way behind on my mail but just incase this hasn't been answered to
your satisfaction yet...
I have an 83 that came with no key. There is a number on the ignition
lock that you can tell was put there after it was made. This is your
key serial number. All you really need to do is take that number to a
good locksmith and they'll look up the key pattern in a book. $35
later you have a key, now IF your ignition and helmet locks are still
the originals the key will fit both. It would also have fit the tank
if you had that lock cylinder. With that number or at least with the
key you can have your new gas cap cylinder matched to your key.
***running out to shop***
To get the ignition cylinder off you need to reach up from underneath
with a 10mm socket on a 1/4 drive with about a 3" extension. There is
one long and one short bolt. Pay a little attention which side they
come from, can't hurt anything but it's enough of a pain that you
only want to do it once. Once out it'll unplug so you can take it in.
When I did mine I took the whole bike with me in the back of my truck
so I could check the other 2 locks, but not everyone has that ability.

Thanks for the suggestion Kurt. The locksmith I spoke to said they
couldn't promise the key they would make from the ignition would
work on the helmet lock if I only brought in the ignition. :-/
I added some more photos to my album of the bike in its current
state and a couple photos of the inaccessible screws on the helmet
lock.
