Damn you ask hard questions for a new guy. lol I had to go pull the
ignition off the bike... but I also took macro pics to save in my
nighthawk folder in case I loose the 3 keys I have. I'll put it back
together in the morning when my shop is above freezing and I can find
my 1/4 drive, 3/8's was a pain in the hump.
Mine is 2NE### If you have no joy with your locksmith, either try
another or you could send me the funds and a sase and I can get it
cut and drop the key in the mail. Not as cheep as keys by code
($35cad when I did mine) but shipping should be basically letter mail.

Pat,
I pulled the ignition this weekend and checked with
<http://keysbycode.com>keysbycode.com who told me the code on my
ignition (also on the inside of the gas cap) didn't turn up as valid
in their system. I'll try calling a local locksmith tomorrow though.
Is the code on your 83 a 6 digit code? Mine is 1WH###
Allen,
That's what I'm afraid of. I think I'll see if the seals hold
pressure for now, and if they do get the bike up and running and
replace the forks when I can after a month or something. My wife is
getting antsy about how much I've spent on this project already. I
think it'll be easier to get her onboard for spending some more once
it's running, and especially driving.

your satisfaction yet...
I have an 83 that came with no key. There is a number on the
ignition lock that you can tell was put there after it was made.
This is your key serial number. All you really need to do is take
that number to a good locksmith and they'll look up the key pattern
in a book. $35 later you have a key, now IF your ignition and helmet
locks are still the originals the key will fit both. It would also
have fit the tank if you had that lock cylinder. With that number or
at least with the key you can have your new gas cap cylinder matched
to your key.
***running out to shop***
To get the ignition cylinder off you need to reach up from
underneath with a 10mm socket on a 1/4 drive with about a 3"
extension. There is one long and one short bolt. Pay a little
attention which side they come from, can't hurt anything but it's
enough of a pain that you only want to do it once. Once out it'll
unplug so you can take it in. When I did mine I took the whole bike
with me in the back of my truck so I could check the other 2 locks,
but not everyone has that ability.
