While it is uncertain what the problem(s) may be, all the information from just a compression check gives you a good idea what's going on inside the engine. Also look at the dipstick. If it's dark above the oil level,the engine likely has overheated, in which case I would definitely ponder the possibility that it needs a complete overhaul. The money you spend on exploratory surgery should apply to the work needing to be done. I wish you well with your project.
