stick your nose in the filler hole, you'll smell whether it's burned or not.   
Another consideration.  I have had three bikes in the last year that were low 
on compression on one or more cylinders.  One was 30 psi on one cyl of a twin, 
another was less than that on an inline 4 (Yamaha XJ650).  Two of those bikes 
the compression came back after running the bikes for a while.  The problem I 
suspect was rust on the valves or v seats and it was burned off.
