The first question you have to answer is $300 worth 40 plus hours of
your time?  Also, $300 for the work you're talking about seams really
low to me.

Most important question: do you trust this mechanic?  I'd look for
another one in your town just to get a second opinion.  I did that
once and was really glad I did - I went back to my original mechanic
and will never let anyone else touch my bike.

Last question:  Do you like wrenching on stuff and to you think this
project would be fun?  If your answer is no then pay the $300.
