dd-wrt gives you a lot more control over the ports, as does openwrt.

>From a hardware perspective, the wrt54g has a single ethernet port
behind a tagging switch.  Packets are tagged with the port # when they
come in, and the kernel has the ability to then create virtual
interfaces based on the tagging.  From a hardware standpoint, there's
nothing special about the WAN port.

With openwrt, you can do anything with the hardware.
