You're not always given a choice, you know. What if company-wide
message boards are only available via your IMAP server?

_This_ would require a special IMAP server; I'm not sure one like
this exists, and would be a lot of work. The IMAP model, for good
or bad, is you always keep everything on the server.

Here's my thinking: For whatever reason, I have messages I'd like to
read on my IMAP server. I already know how to use {n}mh - and I'd
like to combine some of the advantages of IMAP (mailbox mobility)
with some of the advantages of nmh ("toolbox" approach).

The basic tools I think that I use most of the time are: inc, next, prev,
show, comp, repl, folder{s}, refile, scan. Those are relatively easy.
That would give me a nice set of tools to access my mailbox. I
might not have all of the features I want, but since not using IMAP
isn't an option, at least some of it works.
