My point is that you can do these things from a workstation. Why use the resources of the server to do these things?
Firefox: Browsing the web on the server is just a bad idea no matter what browser you're using. Evince: Read the docs on your workstation, not on the server. PuTTy, WinSCP: Of course these are great programs, but why do you need to initiate a connection from a server? WinDirStat: I use treesize, but I can sympathize with this one. The difference is that this is targeting the specific computer you're on so it makes sense to run on a server. It CAN be used remotely, but there is a performance hit as well as possible firewall exceptions. As has been mentioned by a few people, you can put things like PuTTy, WinSCP, ProcMon, PSTools, etc on a share somewhere and run them from there for the infrequent times you *need* to run one from a server. -----Original Message----- From: Matthew W. I'm happy to disagree with you on that point. PuTTY: Invaluable. Telnet, SSH and Serial Terminal in one program. Firefox: I prefer not to use IE, especially in it's "Enhanced Security Configurtation" mode on a server. Evince: A PDF reader is invaluable when the documentation you need is only in PDF. WinSCP: I deal with Linux servers, so this is extremely useful for me. WinDirStat: Probably the weakest one on my list, but I find I use it often. --Matt Ross Ephrata School District ----- Original Message ----- From: Crawford, Scott [mailto:[email protected]] To: NT System Admin Issues [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Fri, 09 Dec 2011 09:49:05 -0800 Subject: RE: things to include in a vm template? > These are all great things for a workstation, but not really for a server. > On some occasions, maybe, but not as a general rule. > > -----Original Message----- > From: Matthew W.
