Something must have happened at Apple this year as a 'trigger' to allow
companies access to the prores licensing, and it wasn't only for Autodesk.
After years of Apple refusing to let companies have the license for prores
creation on anything except OSX, some type of upper level policy change must
have been made. I spoke with several transcoding application developers at NAB
and they all were being allowed (as of next month or so) to finally, after
years of trying, purchase licenses from apple allowing prores creation. Among
these were Autodesk (Linux) and Quantel (on Windows), who has also been trying
for years to obtain it.

We had given up on the hope of seeing this support so long ago that we spent a
lot of time customizing ffmpeg to suit all our prores needs. It's worked very
well for us. The irony is that, now that we've all but abandoned final cut and
rarely are requested to create prores, Apple final gave in and allowed everyone
to do so.
