Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 

July 27, 2020

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)

     7/29: 9 Shorebird species including 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER were seen 
from VanDyne Spoor Road. also seen were 6 SANDHILL CRANES.

     8/1: 7 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 8 STILT SANDPIPERS and 5 SANDHILL CRANES 
were seen at East Road Some of the Cranes were fledglings.

     10 WHIMBRELS were seen at VanDyne Spoor road in flight. 42 minutes later 
10 WHIMBRELS were seen in flight at the Visitor’s Center. Same birds? 2 
CERULEAN WARBLERS were seen in the forested area on Armitage Road.







Onondaga County

------------




     Up to 5 SEDGE WRENS are still being heard in the Big Fields area west of 
60 road at the Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. RED CROSSBILLS were 
again found at the crossroads of Shakham Road and Herlihy Roads in Morgan Hill 
State Forest.

     7/28: A BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 3 SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPERS were seen along 
the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake.

     7/29: An early RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET was seen on Shakham Road in the Morgan 
Hill State Forest.

     7/30: A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was seen on Penoyer Road in Fabius.

     8/2: 2 WHIMBREL were seen from the West Shore Trail on Onondaga Lake.







Oswego County

------------




     One PIPING PLOVER, this year’s juvenile, is still being seen at the Sandy 
Pond Outlet on lake Ontario.

     7/29: A possible POMERINE JAEGER was seen at the Sandy Pond Outlet on Lake 
Ontario. Also seen were 12 SANDERLINGS and 2 WHIMBREL.The WHIMBREL and the 
SANDERLING were seen again of 8/2.

     7/30: A Male REDHEAD was seen in Oswego Harbor.







Cayuga County

------------




     RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, now a family of 7, are still being seen at Fair 
Haven State Park.

     8/2: 4 WHIMBREL and a RED KNOT were seen at West Barrier Bar Park in Fair 
Haven.







Madison County

------------




     A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at the Great Swamp Conservancy north of 
Canastota. A SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER was seen at the Madison Street Impoundment 
north of Hamilton.







Oneida County

------------




     7/27: 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue at Verona Beach State Park. 

     7/28: 2 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were seen at the Shenandoah Golf Course at 
Turningstone Casino.
