Thanks for the reply - you do know a lot about automatic gates :)

If it had just been me, I would more than likely agree that the gate hadn't
been closed properly - but my husband, myself and our maid checked the gate
last night before we went to sleep - and it was closed! That is what I don't
understand.

But you are right at least the beams work. But things are really getting
ridiculous - we have an electric fence, beams, an alarm - and still people
manage to get in - what else do we need - ss guards with dobermans walking the
perimeter? And the stupid thing is we really don't have anything worth stealing
- the security is to protect my children (the only thing of value that we do
have!). So these people who keep trying to get into our house are going to be
really disappointed if they do make it in!

Subject: Re: [obsnw] Attempted break-in riddle

Hi Carys

It's quite unlikely that there is another remote out there that can
open your gate. Most modern remotes are "rolling-code" remotes which
are *practically* impossible to hack. (You can ask the guys at most of
the bigger key cutting places if yours is rolling code).

Most gate motors have an Allen Key that tightens the motor clutch.
This is the thing you loosen in the even of a power failure. If that
isn't properly tightened someone who pushes hard enough will be able
to slide the gate open. (I assume this is what you are talking about
by "tried to move the gate when it was closed"). The other possibility
is that your strain safety sensor kicked in. That's the thing that
stops the gate motor if something (car/child) gets in the way... This
is not the optical sensor (you may or may not have one of those) but
instead a part of the motor itself. Sometimes a stone on the track,
rusty bearings or just an old motor can cause the strain safety sensor
to stop the gate prematurely. (Ie. You hit the button and see it start
closing and walk inside, but it doesn't close the whole way). The
optical sensor (if you have one) will usually completely open the gate
if something gets in the way, whereas the strain safety will usually
just stop the gate dead.

I know way too much about automatic gates!

The good news is that your beams worked!

Occam's Razor says you guys probably left the gate open by mistake...
