hmmm....Ok, I may have been miss-infomred. I thought the reason for a videocard HAVING its own ram is so it didnt use your onboard ram.
I understood if you had a 256mb vid card built into the M/board then it took 256mb from the system ram, but not if the card had its own ram.....seems to defeat the purpose.....well to me....

Not so.  The video card may be using its own ram but it is still blocking your access to the computers ram.  E.g. in my laptop, I have 4gb ram, and a nvidia sli graphics card with 512mb of ram.  Win 64 sees 4gb, win 32 saw about 3.3gb.

Only if its a build in video card tho. If you have a nice GForce card thats plugged into your PCIE port with 1gb onboard, its not using system ram, its using its own ram.

Sean makes a good point, this can be a bit of an issue, the memory from
your graphics card needs to get mapped somewhere, if you have a 4GB
machine with a 1GB graphics card, on a 32-bit O/S you lose 1 GB of
system memory.
