It's only an issue on 32 bit operating systems, which only have access to a total of 4GB ram max. On a 64 bit operating system it can address a whole lot more memory (I guess about 4 billion times as much), so the address space for the memory on the video card need not conflict with system memory.
It's amazing how complex constructing a new computer is these days, I seem to remember it being a whole lot easier - or it could just be that I'm getting old - how do I set the clock on my VCR again?
