A separate video still uses its own ram, not system ram.  However a portion of 
the address range is mapped for the video card and is not available for system 
use.  The memory mapping is really only a problem over about 3gb depending on 
your computer.  With less than 3gb, the mapping still occurs but it uses a 
portion of the address range that is not in use.

hmmm....Ok, I may have been miss-infomred. I thought the reason for a videocard 
HAVING its own ram is so it didnt use your onboard ram.
I understood if you had a 256mb vid card built into the M/board then it took 
256mb from the system ram, but not if the card had its own ram.....seems to 
defeat the purpose.....well to me....
