The first time I saw this "trend" was in legislation produced somewhere --
Michigan, perhaps? -- in the mid-1970s. This legislation mandated "Plain
English" laws. You can see how successfully the trend has swept the nation
in three decades, eh?

It's a popular issue for certain populist politicians to beat on. And for
all the reasons cited, it's horribly misguided. Those populist politicians
are either poltroons or demagogues.
