Well, I only saw this email as a snip in Doug's, so I don't know who said
it. Leads me to wonder if the server's working ok....

My intention was not to offend, and I want to make a profit, of course; who
doesn't? I'm just saying that some of us will be happy with little profits,
and would be glad to see everyone succeed with their companies. In fact, I
felt that the total open content thing would help a bunch of other
companies: you'd be free to use what we come up with, after all.

And, I do thank Ryan and everyone on this list!!! I would just like to see
the Open Gaming foundation be a little more about supporting Open Gaming,
and not just the D20 license--and it is a little hard to accept the
neutrality position when you work for Wotc, Ryan (but I'm for ya!!!).

Anyway, A lot of cool ideas could come from the fan sector and small
presses, but the legal entanglements do scare the hell out of us. It's
beginning to sound like a person should just go ahead and do whatever he or
she wants, though. At least if you are wrong, someone will come by in a
slap-your-hand manner and let you know. I don't know at what point it
becomes a sue-your-pants-off manner, however.

<<Ryan said about the creation of the OGF: I believe in doing well by doing
good. As I've said before, my analysis
indicated that this was a time when doing something really great for the
community in general was a good strategic business fit for WotC's commercial
interests.>>

It would be nice if you extended this good deed further by helping people
with entirely open content indicate this with a Wotc approved
trademark...Open20 would still point them back to the PHB, after all. It not
a loss situation for them. The D20 logo alone does not scream out that you
can use everything within freely--you have to open the book, which usually
means buying it--to find out what's usable. Of course, most of you have
pointed out that this feature is only of importance to other companies, but
I think it would be important to fans, as well.

I'm sure the response is that everyone will be requesting new graphics if
you do so. You're probably right to say so. I'd also like to see the OGF
be a bit more about mentoring in what can and cannot be done, but I
understand the problems with offering legal advice. Alas, these are just
wishes.

Christina
