but many titles are not trademarks, and i certainly don't have to
trademark a title of a work i write, and even if i do so, i'm
unlikely to deny myself permission to use my trademark. so, i write
two works:
1: Foo: the RPG
2: Bar
Foo is released under the D20STL. it is a nearly-complete RPG,
lacking only character creation and advancement rules. on the cover,
it says "Requires the Use of Bar". Bar is a non-open work,
copyrighted, but distributed online for free. it contains original
(that is, not taken from an existing game) chargen rules. as long as
i don't ever explain *why* you need Bar to play Foo, i should be
safe--i might even be able to say why, but it's likely that the ban
on chargen under the D20STL would apply to explaining how to find
rules for chargen, as well as those rules themselves.

If any religion is right, maybe they all have to be right. Maybe God
doesn't care how you say your prayers, just as long as you say them.
