Hmm... For some reason I've always avoided those movies... :-) Seriously,
though, I haven't seen it.
As for ripping of Lovecraft, well, a lot of, or all of, his material is
public domain now. I'm not sure if it was back when the Illithid was
conceived of, but the idea of a brain-eating, tentacle-mouthed humanoid
can't be copyrighted or trademarked. (Yes, I know I'm contradicting
something I said earlier, but I'm sticking with this now, honest.) However,
the illithid was much smaller than Cthulhu, which is what Illithids seemed
to be patterned after, to me. Also, the mind blast was something different
added to them, so I would say they differed enough to be legal. Now, I'm
not going to comment on the Deities and Demigods with the Cthulhu Mythos in
it... :-)

Illithid reference violatio n?
But what about Night of the Living Dead?
"Brains......brains....."
And, like I said, what about the physique of the mind flayer
being a lift
from Lovecraft to begin with? :)
