Right.  That's all you're changing.  You're still using the entire system, 
with one small change.  That's what makes it derivative.  That mechanic 
doesn't exist in a vacuum, it exists with the entire protectable d20 system.  
Sure that one small change is too small to be protectable, that's why _you_ 
can't protect it.
