Since the list has been rather idle lately, I thought it might be wise
to make use of this time to do some forward thinking about how we'd
like this project to evolve in the future. Some of what I think we
should discuss will influence nearer-term decisions, as well as set us
up to handle contingencies as technologies evolve.
How about instead of more advanced 3d card apply some of the knowledge to
the server sector? Remote management cards are still pretty pricey and
feature incomplete. A peppercorn eRIC express is still well over 300$.
Dracs are cheaper, but they are Dell specific. We could offer a far better
remote managment solution and a remote graphics display.
Some key things that I would like to see in a remote management card would
be:
Minimum 100Base-TX ethernet output. Preferably with a POE output that could
power an external 3 port mini hub or switch.
KVM over IP.
Virtual CD/HD/Floppy.
Appears as an ethernet card to the OS.
* also as a video card... otherwise, you won't get the console :D
Several GIOs for front panel displays, alert lights, intrusion alarm, motion
detector.
Read fan speed and temps off the I2C bus.
2 or 3 extra temp inputs for
Power On/Off/Reset
4 USB ports for cameras etc.
Power quality monitoring. (Line voltage and DC bus voltages).
Anything else?
serial port
Servers are still the biggest market for OSS. If the costs associated with
remote management could be pushed down I think many people would be
interested in it.
