Amount of displayed information should me more configurable. To simplify 
user interface, there might be more deep hierarchy, novice/normal/expert 
mode etc. And adaptive details density might be used: more details around 
current position (or center of the screen), less details away from it.

As suggested by Majka you could deactivate maps you don't use it will speed

 It is not possible in some cases. For example, France map consists of 13 
regions while only 3-4 are required on a regular basis. But I need to have 
road-only map of entire country to driver between usual regions through 
unusual ones.

It should be not hard to add a setting to control rendering of overlapping 
maps: "local only", "local above common", "common only".
