Jackie,

I would rather attend a birth with the woman in the birth stool any day. Those that use the "stranded beetle" position kill my back, have had doses of sciatica from that before. It is the little bit leaning position that can to the damage. At least sitting on the floor in front of the woman on a birth stool my back is in a more relaxed position. If you have to it is not hard to do an examination or break waters from the birth stool. To be there she would need to be pushing as to sit on a  stool too long would cause a lot of pelvic floor congestion from the pressure of the stool.

The stranded beetle position (love the imagery of that name and it is a
very scrutinous position really, isnt it?) doesnt put any of the
attending professionals backs out, does it? I mean, if you want to check a
woman on a birth stools dilation, or break her waters, etc, how do you do
that??? It would be sort of like Twister the party game which I
personally love! No wonder women want to use birth stools... Less of those
invasive examinations/interventions if you arent in an easily accessible
position!
But, seriously, its all about loss of control, isnt it? Fear of
litigation... Sad.
