What I have done to resolve the size issue and maintain compatibility:
1) Compiled two versions, one with color BITMAPFAMILY and one with
BITMAP.  That saved some prc size.

2) Distributed both versions, leaving color code in both versions.

3) Either version will be compatible with both device types, I hope.

The easiest thing would be if black and white users would just live with
the extra size.  But many don't want the baggage.

Here is the phenomena at work:

If you make a change that adds a function that someone doesn't need and
if that change adds 10K, they won't complain.  But if you add color,
which also adds 10k, some will complain.  Go figure.
