OK - here's yet another reason why you should ALWAYS be civil - I've pointed out that
to "experienced" palm users is can be
insulting and demeaning to assume the worst. But why would you want to be harsh to
beginning palm programmers? Aren't they the
very people who you want to leave with a good feeling, encouraged to develop for the
PalmOS platform? I've seen some very open
novices ask for general direction and get slammed brutally for asking.
Simply giving some gentle direction really should work in most cases. After all,
this is hardly one of those "advocacy" groups.
And if a question offends you, you don't have to answer it. :)

I was referring to a hypothetical person who does not heed simple hints and continues
to use the users group as a basic tutoring
class. I myself have never seen this happen, but I mentioned it because there are
people on this list who are very concerned that
it will get "dumbed down", i.e., so many people flooding it with basic questions that
the advanced users can't get help or have time
to answer all the questions. (This is a valid fear - I can barely keep up with 150
messages a day now) I included that statement
to show that if there was a real problem of this nature, you could stop it without
penalizing the normal users.
But you're right - there is never a reason to not be civil - after all, isn't this a
moderated (albeit private) list? If someone
got on here, for example, and wouldn't stop sending emails about PocketPCs being
better than Palms, we wouldn't have to "convince"
him to stop - he'd be removed, right?
