One thing I would note is that all communities are comprised of smaller groups. Many do have some form of membership (my IPMS club, for example, requests that you sign in and donate to cover rental of the building we meet in). We are a smaller group of the google group community and our common interest is paper modeling. We have to apply to join up and be accepted. What makes it different is that most of us choose the direct email option as opposed to logging on and reading through the threads. We cannot access the group or download areas without being members. So in reality we are the same as a forum, just without the fancy html facade.
