I use MacModemMagic scripts. They are easy to load, and relpace the scripts in the modem CP. They do work much faster and don't seem to cause any problems. Connection rates shown in the box claim to be up to 240000bps; the fastest Mac script did about 49000... IF I was lucky. Generally they start at 115000 since I upgraded to OS 8.6 and Newer G3 in my 6116.
