I've never used TechTool Pro to optimize (or defragment) my disk, but Norton actually
moves data around
on the disk to make all parts of a file contiguous. A word of caution: Norton updates
the disk
directory only when it has completed all moves, so if your computer crashes before
it's done, the
directory doesn't represent the actual ordering of data of your disk. Not good!
DiskWarrior, which is
what I always use, leaves the data alone and simply rebuilds the disk directory, thus
accomplishing
very quickly what other optimizers take far longer to do. Too, DW doesn't replace the
old directory
until you've had a chance to preview the new directory and compare it with the old
one. If the
directory is optimized, so is the rest of the disk.
