I read this thread backwards and cannot believe my eyes. My first printer was a HP 550C I bought for $600.00 new (Canadian). It worked but was horrible for pictures. Was glad to let it go. I have had NOTHING but Epson ever since. I started with a 740 and it's still going strong over at my sister's (brother-in-law uses it). I have a 900 now and have a 980 and a C80 in the basement (new in boxes), just waiting for the call to duty.
If your problem reoccurs after changing ink cartridges then I would tend to believe that you have a situation that might require service from an "authorized" Epson service depot. I won't begin to tell you that which I don't know, but I have used generic ink in my 740 and 900, and touch wood, have never had a problem to warrant taking it to their authorized repair shop (100 miles away is the nearest). The ink I used to use in my Epson's was Ko-rec-type, but I found a supplier through ebay and they are less than half the cost of the retail brand I used to buy. Here is their web address: http://www.tecwrks.com You can save a little more if you wait for the intended ink to come up for auction. :-} Kevin P.S. check to make sure that your height adjustment is set correctly. Big oval "0" for paper that is regular thickness, and the big "+" for thicker paper.
