I believe that few people who have experienced
the HP 550C and the Epson 740 will dispute
the better photo printing of the Epson 740.
However, a lot has changed at HP since the 550c,
which is from approximately 1989.
Try an HP OfficeJet G85. This machine makes
photos on Plain Paper that are virtually identical to the photo.
I own an HP G85 (which is a recently discontinued model),
a 560C, a 550C, a Lexmark z53, an Epson 850, and an Epson 900.
The old HP printers (550 & 560) aren't very good at photo printing.
But the Epson print heads clog very frequently,
and the band of ink along the left margin of the
900 is very annoying. The old HP printers
reliably print in color or black and white.
My G85 prints color photos with incredible
clarity, better than my 900, cuz the
G85 print heads have not yet clogged. When, (in the future)
they do clog, new cartridges will provide new print heads.
