Germain, I have a PM 6500/250 which is now a G3/500 via Sonnet L2 card. Also have a 6400/180. Both have been good machines. Logic board/processor/PCI cards are very easy to work on. The internal drives are a bit more difficult (not *HARD*) to change out. > A friend said I should not even think of the 6400/6500 family cause of > the IDE drive and the EDO Ram. I have an old Microtek ScanMaker E6 (that > does a terrific job), a La Cie CD burner and a StyleWriter 1200 that I want > to be able to use. I agree w/the other replies as far as interface liabilities. That is NOT a problem w/6500. I believe the internal SCSI is slower than external as it was set to run the CD drive and Zip drive. As to the EDO RAM, there is no or very little price difference between EDO and FPM. In fact I just found 2 64MB for $40/mailed. (used of course) On the other hand, 128MB sticks for the 7600 are not much more than 64MB sticks for a 6500 > Also, will I be able to put the 128 memory stick in my 7200 in the 6500? If the 128MB stick is 2K refresh, you can put it in, but the 6500 will only recognize 64MB of it. Also it will be FPM RAM. I believe it will go in the 7600/7300. This to me is the major drawback w/the machine ... MAX 128 MB of RAM. That still works today, tho not w/OS 10.x. But in 2-3 years, like using a Duo 230 today ... fun, yes ... productive, uhmmm ... > I was also offered a 7300/180/64RAM with monitor for around the same price and > a 7600/120/64RAM/2Gigs with monitor and StyleWriter 2400 for around the same The 7600 sounds best, if you are thinking future upgrade. 3 PCI slots, opposed to 2 in the 6500 1GB RAM opposed to 128MB in 6500 (put that 128 memory stick in the 7600) plus another monitor and a newer printer Lots of G3/G4 processor upgrades, and getting cheaper. Possibility to go to OS 10.x ... The prices might seem high in the states, but considering shipping to Canada, etc ... and the hassle of e-Fray Prolly not bad.
