Ok, here is where I say ooops.   I pulled my 9600 sometime after I 
posted this to swap in a larger HD.  To my surprise, I found the HD 
my iTunes disk is connected to is an IDE drive connected via an 
IDE-SCSI bridge card to the SCSI bus.  I had completely forgotten 
about that piece of equipment.   This is why I don't have stuttering 
problems - as far as the Mac is concerned the drive is SCSI.
