Hi,

I'm a newbie to this list and to older Power Macs. I'm picking up a PM5400/120 for my kids to play with. My questions:

1. What OS should I run on this machine? LEM says, "requires System 7.5.1 through 9.1". Does anyone know which OS will give the best stability and performance?

I would not go past 8.1 without an upgrade card...you could probably get one on eBay for cheap.
Then you could put 9.1 on it. Don't bother with 9.2.2, 9.1 is more compatible and 9.2 is for those running it with X.

I'm going to slightly disagree with this.

I think that, if he installs 64 MB of RAM in it, and even better, can find a cache card, that 8.6 will be just fine and run reasonably fast. Particularly if he can find and install the Connectix SpeedDoubler software.

There's too much good freeware/shareware that really needs 8.6 to work.

I've a Performa 6300CD with 64 MB in it and it runs 8.6 perfectly fine, albeit a bit slower than 8.6 on the 200Mhz 5400, since the 6300CD is a 100Mhz machine.

As for OS 9.2.2, well, as an exercise in geekery, I'm all for it, but as a day to day OS on a somewhat limited machine, even with maxed out RAM/Cache card, I don't know.

Eventually, I'll do it on my 5400/200, but only after I install a Sonnet 400Mhz G3 upgrade card.
