Hi,
I'm a newbie to this list and to older Power Macs. I'm picking up a PM5400/120 for my kids to play with. My questions:
1. What OS should I run on this machine? LEM says, "requires System 7.5.1 through 9.1". Does anyone know which OS will give the best stability and performance?
I would not go past 8.1 without an upgrade card...you could probably get one on eBay for cheap. Then you could put 9.1 on it. Don't bother with 9.2.2, 9.1 is more compatible and 9.2 is for those running it with X.
After having just finished a reclamation project of about 80 54/5500s, and tried OSs 7.6.1, 8.0, 8.1, 8.5.1, and 8.6, I'd have to disgree. With at least 64MB RAM, 8.6 is about the smoothest and more stable OS to run. Yes, he could run 9.1 with or without and G3 upgrade card, but 9.1 is a memory hog and the 5400 has a memory limitation.
4. A good source for RAM?
