Its written to the disks. Windows XP and 2000 have the same feature built in. NT might also, not to sure. I'm not sure where it is written on the disk, I would imagine the MBR? I dunno, who cares, it works right? XP does not allow you to setup software RAID on the boot volume though. OS X does, thats why it's better.
