Or he could get a pent 100 PC and install Linux and the netatalk package.

Linux is the hard part if you haven't done it - netatalk is simple. I use it at home on an SUSE machine to server file and print services to both my Mac and my wife's PC.

BTW, what's the
deal on getting the PC's and Macs to talk to each other and to share files?

Three options come to mind

First- entirely on topic- is to get a product called Dave http://www.thursby.com/products/dave.html that you install on a Mac that lets Macs and pcs share files over your already wired network.
This is the easiest and least hassle way to do it.

Second is a lot more geeky and somewhat off topic, but with 4 systems running you may want to consider it, if you are up to it. This option is to get an old pc (pent 100 is fine, as long as you have at least 64 meg of ram) and install Win NT with the services for Macintosh package. Based upon what I just saw on epay, you can pick up Win NT for under $20, and a pent 100 computer at for next to nothing at your local thrift store. Get a big HD for this and you can use it to back up all the files from your systems, a lot faster and neater than using removable media.

Third is the geekiest of all. Get a copy of Virtual PC from the swap list. Install Win NT server on VPC (I don't know if this can be done, but the prospect of this project is just too cool) and run Win NT server on a Mac.

Options 2 and three are by no means easy, it just depends on what you want to do with the network
