Linux is the hard part if you haven't done it - netatalk is simple. I use it at home on an SUSE machine to server file and print services to both my Mac and my wife's PC.
Forty lashes for me. How could I have forgotten the Linux option. Since it is based on unix, like our beloved (by most people, but we are on the pci list- so not too beloved) OS X it would get you comfortable with the underpinnings of OS X when and if you migrate.
